Mindfulness in Everyday Movement

Here is a helpful tip to strengthen your sati (mindfulness). Whenever you move, try to move deliberately while noticing the movement itself. This helps keep the mind in the present moment.

When movements are done with awareness, it becomes easier to recognize the intention behind the action. As the Buddha said, “Intention, I tell you, is kamma.” (A6:63.11)

Through mindfulness, you may begin to notice that intentions do not arise randomly. They are often influenced by past kamma as well as by the three poisons—lust, hatred, and delusion.

By observing this carefully, you can see how the mind forms intentions and how those intentions become new kamma. This understanding helps you recognize the causes of your actions and gradually free your mind from the influence of the three poisons.
