The Four Noble Truths in Everyday Driving
Whenever something happens, reflect the event against the Four Noble Truths. For example, if someone cuts you off on the road while driving, you may experience fear (of a potential accident) and anger. Observe your reaction and see the root cause in the Four Noble Truths. In this case, your negative feelings are rooted in your desire or expectation for a safe, pleasant driving experience. One of the sufferings is ‘not getting what one wants,’ which applies in this situation. Through this driving experience, you may gain wisdom that you cannot control external factors no matter your wish or desire; therefore, your desire, in this case, was an unrealistic and unreasonable desire (Tanha), which caused suffering. Recognizing this unrealistic desire can bring a sense of relief and freedom.
