Kamma and the Three Poisons

Wholesome attracts wholesome, and unwholesome attracts unwholesome. Kamma is undeniable and shapes our experience. Even after attaining liberation and Nibbāna (from stream-entry to non-returning), one accumulates kamma until the three poisons (lobha, dosa, moha) are completely eradicated. Although an arahant no longer generates new kamma, they still experience the results of past kamma. Just as the Buddha suffered from back pain due to past kamma, so too do arahants endure the residual effects of previous actions. What to do? Be mindful—mindfulness does not erase kamma but helps reduce suffering by cultivating wisdom and equanimity. [Nancy Acord]
