Moving to a New Home: Impermanence, Attachment, and the Arising of Suffering
Today became unexpectedly busy as we prepare to move to a new home. While cleaning, showing the house, and shopping for things we may need, I noticed worry and concern arising regarding the changing conditions of the new house and its surroundings.
Right now, there is a beautiful open field in front of the house. But thoughts arose such as, “What if the field disappears someday and buildings are constructed there?” I also reflected on how the house itself will gradually age — the floors, walls, and tiles will eventually wear down over time.
As I observed these thoughts, I noticed suffering arising together with the desire for pleasant conditions to remain forever as they are.
Then I realized once again: impermanence itself is not the problem. The suffering comes from the mind wanting to hold onto changing conditions permanently.
When this attachment and craving were mindfully recognized, the mind gradually became lighter and more peaceful.
