Seeing the Three Poisons Arise and Pass Away

In the insight of arising and passing away, the key point is the three poisons—lust, hatred, and delusion—and the impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and nonself that are revealed through their arising and ceasing. The practitioner observes the moment lust, hatred, or delusion arises, and feels the corresponding movements in the mind and the subtle sensations in the body. Through this direct observation, the three poisons become weakened and eventually dissolve on their own.

At the same time, the practitioner clearly realizes through experience that all of these phenomena arise only when the necessary causes and conditions come together, and they cease when those causes and conditions fall apart. They are not something one personally creates, nor something one personally makes disappear. From this experiential understanding, the wisdom of nonself naturally becomes established, and the insight into impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and nonself becomes a lived reality rather than a conceptual understanding.
