Supporting Conditions Are the Key

Have you ever tried hard to fall asleep because you had something important to do the next day? Your intention was clear, your wish was strong, and you made an effort. Yet you remained awake. Without the necessary supporting conditions, sleep does not come. Our intention and effort may help establish those conditions, but they alone cannot make us fall asleep just because we want to.

This is an everyday opportunity to observe non-self. The body and mind operate through causes and conditions.

Pay close attention to this process in daily life. Observe what brings about anger, what sustains it, and what helps it subside. Do the same with greed and delusion. This repeated observation becomes a supporting condition for experiential insight. We begin to see for ourselves how mental states arise and cease through conditions, rather than follow our wishes.

Through this practice, experiential insight into non-self develops into wisdom. We cannot obtain wisdom simply by wanting it. We need to cultivate the conditions that support it.

Supporting conditions are the key, not our wishes.
